want to know a bit more about this awesome organization???!
Detroit Nation, in short, is a group of Detroit (and Michigan) expats who still have an invested interest in their hometown. We're a grassroots organization dedicated to improving the flow of funds, ideas, and energy between native Detroiters now living elsewhere and our hometown. It's a way to stay engaged, meet peers also interested in the cause, and to still make a difference from afar.

One way we accomplish this is through cultural events and fundraisers, centered around Detroit themes and/or current events effecting communities in Detroit. There is a movement in Detroit happening, being shaped by it's arts and community groups, and we look to tap into that with the events we put on in Chicago. The other way we're able to carry out our mission is through online social streams. We are big proponents of the digital landscape, and use social media and other forms of interactive programming as an essential part of our practice for community engagement and outreach to our members. We also use social media (Twitter and Facebook specifically) to target new members and engage current ones, provide insightful content, and connecting to individuals and organizations also attempting to use social media for social good. We are always looking to connect, engage, and build our brand.

Another part of our mission is to change the national perspective people have of Detroit, as what's reported in the mainstream is often a misrepresentation of what is actually happening. One way we'll be hoping to achieve this is by leading mission trips, where we'll meet with small business owners, nonprofit leaders, and community organizers in Detroit. We hope to harness powerful relationships between our members and organizations in Detroit, in the hopes of providing pro-bono services to startups and nonprofits across an array of fields, in a diverse set of capacities in Detroit.

Of course, we need to stay realistic about the problems in the city, which are very apparent. Also apparent, is the hope, optimism, and opportunity that shines in Detroit despite the troubles. Detroit expats have shown the same resilience their city has, and have an invested interest in it's current state, and future. Detroit Nation is a place for us to come together with our passions and ideas, and help fuel the movement.
