Natural Ways To Help With Fevers
It's been a little while since I wrote this post about fevers, 7 years to be exact! So I thought it was due time to re-visit this topic, especially since fevers can cause us parents so much distress. In my personal opinion, however, the majority of the time fevers are actually our friend. Of course, as with everything in life, there are always exceptions, but in general fevers are our bodies natural way of doing what it is supposed to.
I think we tend to forget how powerful our body is or want a quick 'fix'. However, the more we lean on trusting our body to do what it knows & needs to do, the more we trust & respect it. When fever strikes, I always remind myself that it is acting like a fighter to fight off 'invaders'. It's in a way like a thermostat & just resetting itself to the "right" temperature.
Our family doctor has always told us to judge a fever by our child's behavior -- not necessarily the degree on the thermometer. If they are eating, sleeping & hydrating well and have a good amount of energy, then I am more aware that the fever is taking care of it & I don't need to intervene much (if at all).
However, if they are lethargic, complaining a lot, super achy, not wanting to drink or eat, disoriented, unable to rest, etc. then I’ll definitely do more to help aid in lowering the fever so that they are more comfortable.
HERE ARE MY PERSONAL FEVER GO-TO'S:
1. 20-30 minute Epsom Salt + Apple Cider Vinegar Bath (a couple cups of each in a lukewarm bath does the trick -- SIDENOTE : I also do these once a week for my kiddos in general to help detox & refresh the system ).
2. Rotate between 5 Belladonna 30C pellets & 5 Arnica 30C pellets (simply twist the cap & pop the small 5 pellets into their mouth on an empty stomach -- kids love these because they taste sweet, too, which is a bonus)
3. Another great homeopathy to have on hand is Aconitum Napellus 30C -- these pellets are used when there is a sudden onset of fever, along with dry skin and/or agitation/anxiety.
4. I give them a few extra of Hyland's Bioplasma Cell Salts (they dissolve in your mouth almost instantly & are little powerhouses that provide daily supply of each cell salt to bring balance to overall cell function, which then also naturally relief symptoms of colds, simple nervous tension, fatigue & headaches, etc.)
5. Leefy Organics as needed to naturally help with the inflammation & muscle aches/pains.
6. Biotics Research C/Cal/Mag supplement in their water bottle.
7. Damp washcloth with a few drops of lavender & peppermint essential oils (I use Young Living EO's personally) wrapped around their feet.
8. I chop up a white or yellow onion & place in a bowl next to them. It's an old wives tale but I have found it definitely helps!
9. Another old wives tale that works -- slice up an uncooked potato & put a slice or two on the bottom of each foot, then socks over. It will help 'suck' out the toxins in the body.
10.Rotating cold compress/towel on forehead & back of neck (you can also put a couple drops of peppermint & lavender oil on it, too)
11. Hydrate like crazy! Water with electrolytes in it (or just some good salt with lemon juice), broths/soups, clean popsicles, organic herbal teas, etc. Dehydration can cause more issues so making sure your child is hydrated is key.
12. I try to keep my child dressed lightly. Definitely no socks, & if possible only a loose fitting t-shirt plus underwear. If they are cold, I will bundle them up with blankets, etc, but then always try to slowly take away blankets as they are more comfy. This allows the body to truly release & not overheat any more than it needs to.
13. Peppermint Essential Oil mixed with some coconut or olive oil rubbed on bottom of feet & spine.
14. Rest, Rest, Rest!!! Sleep is truly the best medicine.
15. If possible, I also take them in to get adjusted with our chiropractors that we trust. There are SO many benefits to getting adjusted & aligning the spine to aid in the body healing.
Lastly, if all of this feels overwhelming OR you just feel you need some 'extra' help in lowering the fever, you can use Genexa Kids Pain & Fever. Although I haven't personally used this yet, what I like about it is that it is organic, gluten-free, non-GMO, has no artificial sweeteners or preservatives, NO dyes, no parabens & no common allergens. It's something I personally wouldn't recommend using often, but definitely a good one to have on hand 'just in case'.
