believe : self portrait april

  Thursday, 5.2.13

BELIEVE.

there is SO much meaning behind this word to me.

what is it to you?

there are many things i believe in, but one that keeps ringing in my ears even more so than ever is
the possibility of what we can individually do, both small & big, to better this world we live in,
to better the lives of others...
to truly BETTER life in general.

i think sometimes it is all too easy, especially in this digital world of ours, to be distracted or even discouraged,
that you CAN'T make a difference.

but YOU CAN. in our gut, i think we all know this.

as Ralph Waldo Emerson once said,
"What lies behind us & what lies before us are tiny matters compared to
what lies within us."

you don't have to go halfway across the world to make a difference
( although go for it, if that is what your heart is telling you! )...

all you have to do is lead with LOVE.
do what is upon your heart.

hold that door open for the person behind you.
treat your friend to a cup of coffee.
give $1, $5, $10 -- ANY AMOUNT! -- to the next homeless person you come across.
say hello to your neighbor the next time you are walking your dog... even better yet, ask them how they are doing.
smile at a complete stranger. look them straight in the eye & SMILE.
compliment someone -- don't just keep it inside.
write a card or note to someone you know could use it.
volunteer your time or talent towards a good cause.

next time you feel something,
with love at the base,
don't overthink it.
JUST DO IT!

no more hiding behind an invisible curtain.
trust, know & BELIEVE
that...
"the start to a better world is our belief that it is possible."

my april self portrait :
' believe '

it really is the little things that you do
that are MUCH larger then they may 'look' to you at the time.

you NEVER know the trickle effect of what YOUR good deed will do.

...and all because you
BELIEVED.

pretty awesome, right?

with love,

ksen

trust

  Friday, 4.26.13

after just returning from travels back to Punta Cana, Domenican Republic, for Chad & Danielle's wedding & another chance to see our beautiful sponsor child, Yuleidy (more on that to come soon ), it was impossible not to think about our honeymoon only a little less than 8 months ago at the same place.

below is a journal entry that i wrote during that time that i needed to read today...
& wanted to share in case you did too.

september 19, 2012 : 6:42 am

as we got up to watch another sunrise this morning, feet in the cool textured sand heavy from the rain the night before, Mark looked at me & said,

"you know... no matter what happens when we get back to the states,
or what our unborn children grow up to be,
or how long our parents live,
or even what happens today --
the sun will always come up & set every single day."

although this isn't too far off from many of the thoughts that come from my husband's mouth,
(HOLD UP. wait a minute. did i just say 'husband'?!!!!!! )
there was something about this one that just stuck in a different way.

i've been thinking a lot about TRUST on this trip. trusting that all will be okay even though i just took, for the first time since starting my business a little over 6 years ago, a vacation completely disconnected from everything (including my laptop which literally goes with me everywhere), trusting that all our wedding bills will get paid for, trusting that as i feel a shift in my business, God has the ultimate plan for me. for us. ...as He always does.

I've been thinking a lot about how everything that has felt so 'right' in my life has always been layered in an uncanny & undeniable level of trust,,,
despite the overwhelming amount of fear that encrusted it.
trust to leave my 'secure' job to pursue my passion, trust to just 'let it go' after i found out a fellow photographer used her assistant to pretend she was inquiring for a wedding... only to steal my information & contract work!, trust to break off an engagement with a wonderful man because 'something' just didn't feel right (even though nothing seemed 'wrong'),
...trust that there was SOMEONE out there for me with a burning desire for God, a want to make a difference in this crazy beautiful world of ours, a real interest in mind, body & soul,,, and of course, great passion, life & love.

everything is encoded in TRUST. everything. think about it the next time you fear anything...
at that very moment, FEEL what you KNOW to be true.

trust yourSelf --
you will quickly realize that the best guide is always within you.

granted, this lesson is one you may have to repeat & relearn continually,
but one thing is for sure,

i promise you it will be worth it EVERY time.

xxoo

YOUR story : kathleen

  Thursday, 4.18.13

finally getting back into the swing of things after my recent travels to Kenya,,,

& SOOOO ready to share our next i want to know YOUR story!!!

without further ado,
please meet Kathleen.
this is her story.

who are you, where are you from, what excites you, what is your PASSION... what's your story?

Who am I?

I am my husband's wife,
my mother's daughter,
my children's mother,
my friend's confidant,
my employer's worker,
and at the end of the day sometimes I forget

who I "am".

I have never been extraordinary at anything in particular,
in fact I'd say I'm down right ordinary,
and I'm OK with that.

There are absolutely things I've tried to be great at,
but I can't honestly say I was a star athlete, a 4.0 student, or a fashion plate.

What I can say is that I've learned to be
a loving wife (it takes work),
a thankful daughter (it takes time),
a patient mother (it takes love),
a thoughtful friend (it takes wine),
and a hard worker (it takes passion).

I "am" all of those things to all of those people, and if I can be extraordinary at THAT,
well, then that in itself is something great.

The work, time, love, wine, and passion fulfill me.

what are 3 words that describe you & your LIFE?

* thankful
* organized
* chaos

What & who do I love?

My family,
my Dixie dog,
and my friends...

I grew up with a small family and didn't know my grandparents.
I feel blessed everyday my daughter asks to see grandma and papa.
My children melt my heart.

I have very few friends, but those who call me a friend know undoubtedly that I love them to the moon and back!
My Dixie is going on 12+ years with me.
She has been with me almost 1/3 of my life and given me so much joy and comfort.

Kathleen invited me to come over on a weekday night right around dinner time...
where i had the pleasure of documenting a snippet of what her beautiful world consists of!
you have seen a few images above, however here are a few more that totally melted my heart!

the newest additions to their family, adorable David & Andrew!

Mom & sweet Anna!

you know, just hanging out with Dixie,
& holding hands, while being held by Dad

getting ready for some dinner!

there is truly SO. MUCH. LOVE in this home!

...it is a beautiful, beautyFULL thing.

& last but not least,
"what is your most favorite quote?!"
I would say
"I will always be the best "me" that I can be."
the quote is from the song "what I am" by Will.I.AM... Sesame Street Lyrics

...here is the song if you have never heard of it - it's awesome so be prepared to dance

Will.i.am sings "What I Am" on Sesame Street from Abbey Colucci on Vimeo.

Kathleen , it IS awesome!!!
as are YOU!
thank you for sharing YOUR story
& for inviting me into your home.

with love & admiration,

ksen
